been away from the keyboard for a few days….here are the highlights:

did some drinking on saturday.  called it an early night.  sunday had lunch with kate, then watched some carnivale…stuff is getting good and creepy now.  after that, we watched the durham bulls take down the charlotte nights 2-1, with the 2 runs being scored in the bottom of the ninth.  exciting stuff.

we are all made of stars

i’m completely fascinated with google reader right now, and here are some of the crazy stories i’ve been following:

Jesus is coming…to Guatemala:
and the guatemalans are PISSED!.
“Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda is coming to Guatemala whether it wants him or not.

“It has been predestined, and angels will make it happen,” said Axel Poessy, Miranda’s media director. “He is, after all, God himself.”

It is the Puerto Rican-born former evangelical priest’s latest attempts to expand his following in Central America. Most of his supporters are in Miami and Colombia, but Miranda holds a congress every year in the Americas. He has a 24-hour Spanish-language television network and a radio program on 287 stations.

He often takes aim at the Catholic Church — the most powerful faith in Latin America — calling all priests child molesters and saying chastity vows go against the Bible’s teachings. Members of his church have torn up images of saints and other religious symbols in El Salvador, and marched in Guatemala and Honduras.”

I’ve heard of Cat Scratch Fever, but this is ridiculous

“More than a hundred men in the Philippines may have contracted rabies after taking part in a self-flagellation ritual to mark Good Friday, doctors and local authorities said on Thursday.

A health alert was issued after a man who took part in the traditional ceremony – where participants slash their backs with knifes before flaying themselves with bamboo whips – died from the virus on 11 April.

Mario Morales, the mayor of Mabalacat in Pampanga province north of Manila, told local media that Eduardo Sese may have contaminated up to 100 people who shared knives to cut themselves. He was bitten by an infected dog in February 2007.”

I want my flying car goddammit!

a play waiting to happen

posted by: blinkingline filed under: Uncategorized |

i’m thinking that if nothing else, someone should compile a play based on overheard in new york.  it wouldn’t be plot driven at all…just lots of little vignettes based around the conversations that have appeared on the website.

just imagine it.  a rotating stage where there are 3 separate sets:  a subway car, a cafe, the street.  all generic enough that it doesn’t really matter.  then have the stage constantly turning to reveal the little snippets of dialog.  possibly something that needs to show up in an experimental theater for sure.  but this conversation definitely needs to be in the lineup:

20-ish guy: I wish I had a gi-normous cock. I mean, a cock the size of a baseball bat.
20-ish girl: What would you do with it? No woman could fit it in.
20-ish guy: Doesn’t matter. If I had a cock that big I’d never have to argue with anyone again.
20-ish girl: How do you figure that?
20-ish
guy: If someone disagreed with me I would take out my 34-inch cock,
flip it up on the table like a mutant Chateaubriand and make a face
like this [makes a 'So there!' face].
20s-ish girl: So, let me get this straight: You think that a giant penis trumps a logical argument?
20-ish guy: Well, doesn’t it? Like with that guy you met in Aruba last winter?
20-ish girl, after long stare: I told you never to mention that again.

spinach and ricotta

posted by: blinkingline filed under: Uncategorized |

doug, ward, and i had dinner at piedmont last night. as with all the other times i’ve eaten there, it’s just been outstanding. i had a very nice farmer’s lettuce salad to start, then a really well balanced spinach and ricotta ravioli in lemon butter sauce for the second. st bernardus was the beer that i paired with the courses and it seemed to work nicely. to finish everything off, i had cannolis for dessert, washed down with the uber sweet moscato d’asti.

lots of talk about the history of rock and roll and how radio today has gone away as a tool for artist promotion and selling songs over itunes pays bands shit, but it’s a necessary evil.

afterwards, i came home and posted my contribution to the latest mister mixtape theme…it’s a good one.

no trivia night category just yet, if you’ve got a suggestion, give a shout.

here’s the drink recipe i’ve been enjoying after work during the warm summer evenings:

3-4 oz Rum (not spiced or flavored. just plain rum)
1 oz simple brown syrup (simple syup made from brown sugar)
3 oz limeade (i’ve been using Trader Joe’s, but any should work)
soda water
ice
key limes

Mix rum, simple brown and limeade in shaker, pour into tall glass, top with soda water, ice, and limes
