i hate christian radio

posted by: blinkingline filed under: Uncategorized |

anyone who has tried using one of those FM transmitters to broadcast MP3s to your car stereo in the triangle area knows what a pain in the ass it is to try to get a good clean signal.  but i had found the holy grail chirren…a station that would let me listen to my tunes cleanly all the way from my house to work.

until today.

when i started my car, everything was working fine.  i drove up one block, and suddenly all i could hear, completely drowning out the rockingness of grizzly bear, was a preacher telling me about the evils of fornication and gambling.

so, if anyone has a good frequency they use locally, or more importantly knows how to build an FM transmitter that will broadcast over 87.9 or 87.7 FM (most transmitters only broadcast down to 88.1, which doesn’t help in the triangle, where we have WKNC 88.1 being broadcast out of NCSU.) please leave a comment or send me an email.

i’m not even going to bother telling you the movie:

“Having watched an advance DVD of the first three hours, I can offer a mini-review: two thumbs up. Up my own eye sockets.”

admittedly, the folding is nifty, and eliminates the need for a chip clip…but the music, ah the music!

belgian tartine

posted by: blinkingline filed under: Uncategorized |

on the splendid table yesterday, they went over a delicious sounding recipe for a belgian tartine.  click the link to get the background, or read below for the recipe.  i’m always on the look out for some good stuff to eat while drinking, and with the ridiculous amounts of nice belgian beers around these days, this could be a really nice match up:

To get it to taste like it does in Brussels, use grainy, sturdy country-style bread. When buying the cheese, sample for a clean, creamy-yet-tangy fromage frais (French for fresh cheese).  Here’s how to make a tartine:

  • 1 large slice whole-grain country bread, cut about 1/2-inch thick
  • About 2 ounces Fromage Frais
  • 3 thin-sliced radishes, or 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • Coarse salt

1. Spread the bread with the cheese. Fan radish or tomato slices over the cheese and sprinkle with coarse salt.

2. Serve the tartine on a large plate and eat American style with your fingers, or Belgian style with a knife and fork.

Worktime fun

posted by: blinkingline filed under: Uncategorized |
So here’s a nice little IM conversation that a coworker had about a skip level meeting with Harry Boyd*, a vice president in my company.  For those of you that don’t know what a skip level is, it’s basically a meeting where the peons get to talk to vice presidents and air concerns that they have.
UPDATE: my dad advises that this looks like i’m saying negative things about my company…but really i’m not.  the point of the conversation is more how ridiculous my coworker acted…not the views he expressed.

Patti(16:09:01): Bruce* - are you getting on the conference call for the skip level meeting with Harry*?
BU(16:45:25): that meeting was stupid
Patti(16:46:21): you thought it was?
BU(16:46:48): the higher you get in this company…the higher the level of BS you have to say to not only your customers but to your employees as well.
BU(16:48:46): I asked Mr. Boyd* straight up.."So with all this movement to outsourcing clients to Manila and other locations at a cheapier costs; what does that mean for potential fulltime positions for contractors?" ….."Is it REALLY possible or is cutting the cuts the #1 priority?"
BU(16:49:44): I asked him a lot of questions really….he sounded like a politician
Patti(16:50:28): Harry is usually a very straight forward person
Patti(16:50:32): sorry to hear that
BU(16:52:20): yeah, maybe he is..but questions have answers…and not all answers are really right to the question
BU(16:52:26): gotta think outside the box
Patti(16:52:53): well, I am actually Harry’s admin -
BU(16:54:13): uh oh
BU(16:54:24): I thought i was talking to the Patricia on my team
BU(16:54:28): i’m done for
BU(16:54:56): Please forgive me, Patricia
Patti(16:55:04): you don’t know how done you are …harry
Patti(16:55:18): see i can take a joke and i am not a politician
BU(16:55:49): oh man
BU(16:56:36): I feel like horrible
BU(16:58:57): please forgive me and my opinions……I made a mistake and I value this job very much…I take a lot of pride in it actually…maybe my pride is too high? I am really sorry about those comments

there’s a great article about this book in the most recent believer, and while the book itself costs about 450 bucks, some kind soul has put scans of all the pages on flickr.

combine that with the newly found flickrslidr gadget and:
