normally, i try to update the blog at least every tuesday, thursday, and saturday, but yesterday i came home from work and totally crashed.  then about 7:30 kate was heading home, and we tried to call miranda’s so she could pick it up on her way home.  something must have been up with their phone, because i never got through…(could they have been THAT busy?  Viva La Vaquita!)

anyway, so then we ended up getting papa john’s.  while not the world’s greatest pizza, there’s something about the extreme gooey-salty combo going on in the spinach alfredo that hit the freaking spot like nobody’s business.

on a sadder note, my friend tracy’s dog niblet it missing.  he’s a brown pitbull.  not agressive, but very friendly…last seen in the lakewood/tuscaloosa area wednesday.  if you happen to see him, send me an email or give a call.

Tomorrow night’s round two will be an audio round on hip hop. Check yourself ‘fore you wreck yourself.

also…rather than auction off my fine piece of pewter drinking apparatus, i’ll be doing a raffle instead. Tickets will be a dollar each…only sold that night (december 19th), and you must be present to win. The money will go to one of my fave charities.

but this actually needs extra special attention.

how the hell can you be abducted by satan worshippers 30 years ago and brainwashed and that impacts your ability to be mayor?  and where did he get truth serum?

Centerton Mayor Ken Williams said he has been living under an assumed name for nearly 30 years. He had been mayor since 2001.
Williams told authorities he was born Don LaRose and that in the
mid-1970s, he was a preacher in Indiana. He said he was abducted and
brainwashed into forgetting all about his life as Don LaRose. It was a
double-life he had never acknowledged, Williams said, because he didn’t
even realize it existed until he had recently taken a truth-serum
injection…

and people bitch about Bill Bell?

jibarra

posted by: blinkingline filed under: Uncategorized |

now, this isn’t one of the crazy durham foodie blogs, but (as anyone who knows me can attest) i do like me some good food.  last night was LT’s birthday so a few of us went out to jibarra in raleigh to celebrate.  the standing theory was that by choosing to go to jibarra, an upscale mexican restaurant and tequila lounge, lydia could drink tequila for her birthday…because, i mean…she would have to.

as a vegetarian, my options were rather limited, having only a stuffed poblano pepper and a few appetizers to choose from.  i chose to go with a baby spinach salad, which was nice, and a good sized portion, but wasn’t anything amazing.  the quesadillas i ordered were done in a corn masa, rather than flour tortillas, which made them a little more like gorditas.  they were served with a tomatillo and avocado salsa, which had a really nice fresh taste to it.  the quesadillas were a tad bit greasy for my taste, meaning i had to do a lot of napkin wiping.

kate had the ravioles with scallops, of which she said the ravioles were nice, but the scallops were way too fishy for her tastes.

other peoples dishes were very nicely presented and most seemed to enjoy them well enough.

unfortunately, our service ranged from smarmy to downright rude.  here’s a little tip for anyone who is wanting to open a niche gourmet restaurant:  hire servers who care enough about the food to learn the correct pronunciation of the dishes, and who don’t insult your patrons.

in the introduction to the restaurant, our server told us that the food was “real mexican”, and that a lot of the dishes featured a lot of chili and heat.  “if you don’t feel it right away, you’ll be feeling it by dessert, if you know what i’m saying…”

he out and out insulted another member of our table and made comments with some pretty bawdy innuendo at several of the ladies.

in addition to this, i found the prices to be somewhat expensive for the experience.  kates scallops were 19 dollars, whereas a similar presentation and portion could be had at one of durham’s mexican eateries (kate and i both were quick to jump to tonali as being both better in taste and more reasonable in price.)  granted, my feelings on the value of the meal could have been very much influenced by the service.

so overall, kate and i both agreed that we had no reason to go back, and we’d be just as happy eating takeaway from miranda’s.
