10. Mixing alcohols will result in a hangover.

All drinkable alcohol is ethyl alcohol mixed with water and flavorings. Sure, some alcohols are made with things you might be allergic to, like wheat or the cogeners and sulfites found in grapes, but for the most part, it’s all the same: beer, wine, gin, tequila, it’s all ethyl alcohol and flavor.

I’m going to put this as clearly as I can: the reason you had a hangover last Saturday was because you had three beers, a glass of red wine, two shots of tequila, a martini, and four gins and tonic.

Simply put: it’s not the variety of different drinks you had: you simply drank too much.

so i read a lot of durham based blogs and am on several list-servs, and by doing so i get a really good glimpse of two things: 1) a lot of the really shitty stuff that goes on in durham told by people in a first hand account and 2) the willingness and dedication of the people in durham to make their community better. this email that i got this morning really hit me as a perfect example of both:

It use to be quiet on the top of moreland avenue. it’s an apartment
that has gotten ridiculous. 1007 moreland avenue. apt a.. the crack
heads are coming from the bottom to the top. It’s a white women and
black man that stays there. they are up all night smoking with every
crack head in the area. The drug man comes off and on all through the
day. Please there are older people on this end. Could we please get
some relief or tell me what to do. they even let another crack couple
move in with them. I’m trying to raise my two boys. Officer Hall are
you out there give me a shout.

I’m so tired.

but certainly, the most cordial team in the bar. we ended up in fourth place, a fine showing for a team that had never played together. other people poo-poo the whole “team dynamic” thing, i find it almost as essential to the win as beer.
